Day 6 began with Andy and Josh waking to the soothing sounds of nature… if your idea of soothing is torrential rain hammering the tent, thunder rumbling overhead, and floodwater attempting to relocate their campsite. The weather had clearly not received the memo that this was supposed to be a pleasant walking holiday. The discussion over breakfast was unanimous: today’s walk should be abandoned. Their clothes were soaked, their shoes squelched with every step, and after five consecutive nights camping, morale was beginning to resemble the weather forecast. A sensible decision all round.

However, as history has repeatedly shown, sensible decisions and Andy and Josh do not always travel together. Halfway through breakfast, they checked the weather app and spotted what appeared to be a tiny gap in the storm. A brief pause in the weather’s relentless assault. This was apparently all the encouragement they needed. Within minutes, the decision was reversed, tents were hastily packed away in a damp heap, and they bid farewell to Sunbiggin.

The 10-mile journey from Sunbiggin to Kirkby Stephen was completed at a pace normally associated with people being chased. Witnesses report seeing two hikers moving at such speed that local sheep were left confused and slightly intimidated.

The weather has been determined to make life difficult for them over the last six days, but today the lads finally fought back. Rather than face another evening wrestling with soggy tents and damp sleeping bags, they made an executive decision: enough was enough.

A cottage was booked.

A real roof. Real walls. Heating. A kettle. Possibly even dry socks.

Luxury.

There was only one slight issue. The cottage came with only one bed.

After a brief discussion involving far more awkward eye contact than necessary, the lads agreed to share. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Sources close to the pair insist a pillow barrier will be in operation and that neither party will be spooning, despite rumours circulating among friends and family.

With their accommodation secured, Andy and Josh headed to the pub for a thoroughly deserved pint. Six days of battling the elements had earned them that much at least. The strange thing is that despite spending most of the week being repeatedly drenched, they somehow both seem to have developed impressive suntans. Scientists are baffled.

It’s worth remembering why they’re putting themselves through all of this. Andy and Josh aren’t just tackling miles of challenging terrain and some of the worst weather the British summer can throw at them; they’re doing it to raise money for charity and shine a light on the importance of men’s mental health.

The support they’ve received so far has been incredible. Thanks to the generosity of friends, family, colleagues and complete strangers, they’ve already raised an amazing £1,125. The messages of encouragement have helped keep them going through the tougher days, and they are hugely grateful to everyone who has donated and shared their story.

Tomorrow they set their sights on Keld. The forecast remains unpredictable, the legs are getting tired, and the tents are still damp, but spirits remain high. After all, they’ve survived thunderstorms, floods, endless hills, and now a night sharing a bed.

Surely the hardest part of the journey is behind them… although convincing everyone that the single bed was purely a logistical necessity may prove to be their biggest challenge yet.

Six days down. Nine to go!
